Open World Visit to Los Alamos ... April 2011

Posted on April 6th, 2011

The Los Alamos – Sarov Sister City Initiative (LASSCI), oversees activities with our Sister City of Sarov, Russia. In addition to activities solely related to our relationship with Sarov as a Sister City, we also host Russian visitors under a Library of Congress program, called Open World (www.openworld.gov).

Open World is a Congressionally funded program through the Library of Congress. Los Alamos has hosted a number of Open World delegations on topics including women in leadership, social programs, library services, environmental science, and others. When we host Open World visitors, the delegations always include representatives from Sarov.

From 8 – 16 April, Los Alamos will host another Open World delegation from Russia. The theme of this visit is Higher Education. During their stay in Los Alamos, the visitors will have a busy agenda that includes interactions with Los Alamos High School, UNMLA, Northern New Mexico College and Santa Fe Community College. They will also meet with State government representatives, attend a County Council Meeting, visit Bandelier National Monument and the Bradbury Science Museum, and receive additional introduction to the cultural attractions of .Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico.

This Open World delegation will include two representatives from our Sister City, Sarov, one from Irkutsk, and one from Veliky Novgorod. The group will be accompanied by an Open World Facilitator from Ufa, Russia.
