A group of 10 high school aged youth and 2 adult advisors from Sarov arrive in Los Alamos on Thursday, August 11, for a two-week visit. They began their journey on Tuesday evening with an overnight train ride from Sarov to Moscow, where they go straight to the airport for their long flight to the U.S. They spent the night in Albuquerque before driving to Los Alamos through the Valles Caldera. The agenda for their visit is filled with opportunities to learn about Los Alamos and its Northern New Mexico surroundings, including visits to Santa Fe, Taos and San Ildefonso Pueblo. They will also enjoy Survival: New Mexico events at El Rancho de Las Golondrinas, participate in the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo, visit classes at Los Alamos High School, several Gordon Concerts, and other sightseeing and social activities.

This visit was originally scheduled to begin in late June, but had to be postponed at the last minute because of the Las Conchas Fire. Indeed the decision to halt the visit was made just as the group was about to board their train for Moscow, and just hours before the evacuation of Los Alamos was ordered. Though deeply disappointed at the time, the people of Sarov understood the reason for the postponement, and the entire original group is now coming to Los Alamos. The visit promises to be a great learning experience for both the Russian and American participants.
